Excerpt: "In July, government will expand the Nova Scotia Child Benefit to include more families, while also raising the amount eligible families receive. The $18 million investment, included in the 2020-21 budget, is the largest single increase to the benefit since it was created in 1998. 鈥淲e鈥檙e putting more money directly in the hands of families who need it,鈥 said Kelly Regan, Minister of Community Services. 鈥淭his is another major investment in the children of our province.鈥 Families with incomes below $34,000 will now be eligible."

Excerpt: "The coronavirus has uncovered myriad inequities within systems of education, from childrens鈥 and families鈥 access to resources, to the supportive and safe environments that are necessary for optimal learning. Inequities are exponentially greater in times of crisis. In Canada, more than 2.3 million primary-age children remain at home. Challenges of inequity were immediately apparent as public school authorities began responding."

鈥業t became part of my life鈥: OISE鈥檚 Doug McDougall named JJ Berry Smith Doctoral Supervision Award winner

A member of OISE鈥檚 faculty, Professor Doug McDougall, has been named one of two recipients of the 2020 JJ Berry Smith Doctoral Supervision Award.

This School of Graduate Studies award recognizes outstanding performance in the multiple roles associated with doctoral supervision 鈥 including Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Musical Arts and Doctor of Juridical Science programs. Two awards are offered annually: one in the Humanities and Social Sciences and one in the Physical and Life Sciences. University Professor Ted Sargent was awarded in the latter category.

Professor McDougall is the third OISE faculty recognized with this award since the honour was established in 2013. Dr. Clare Kosnik, from the department of Curriculum, Teaching & Learning, was recognized in 2014. Dr. Judith Wiener, from the department of Applied Psychology & Human Development, won in 2017.

Excerpt: "As of June 12, child-care centres in Ontario can open, following reopenings in most regions of Qu茅bec. But while these child-care centres are doing their part to support families in the post-coronavirus recovery, and Ontario is offering some extra help, Canada needs to find economically efficient ways of supporting child-care programs while simultaneously incentivizing quality. In so doing, it would follow some of the smartest approaches to economic recovery, development and social wellness already evidenced in parts of Canada and the world."
